Key highlights in 2009 was the growth and diversification of our London platform, our foray into several international markets such as Australia, North America, Brazil, and Pakistan, and the launch of our retail distribution platforms in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
4. There has been much debate about the need for the mandatory training of entry level insurance staff in Bahrain. What do you see as the roles of the CBBBB and BIABIABIA moving this forward?
It is very straightforward. The new generation is the future of the Bahraini market. In order for us to grow the market, we need to train and educate people with insurance skills. The CBB, BIA, as well as GII are critical to achieving this goal from a regulatory point of view first to ensure that the customer’s interest is looked after, and second from a quality learning point of view. Both the BIA and GII are taking more practical learning approaches to their introductory training programs which is allowing fresh trainees to make any impact in the companies they join almost immediately.
As long as the cost of training is economic to the market, and perhaps even continue to be subsidized such as through the Tamkeen programme, the new mandatory training initiative will be very successful.
5. What are your plans for 2010?
In 2010, we are looking to reinforce the growth in market share achieved in 2009 as well as to continue to grow our retail platforms in Bahrain. We are looking at expansion opportunities across the Gulf and MENA, including a number of joint ventures with similar minded companies like Crescent who share the same goals and ethical values. We are very very excited.
6. Reflecting on the Gulf Insurance Forum held in Bahrain, would you like to see more insurance conferences being held in the Kingdom? It is no secret that contrary to the lack of participation at some events in other parts of the region, every conference held in Bahrain seems to always be a hit and well attended. Why is that do you believe?
We most certainly want to see more conferences here in Bahrain. Bahrain is the gateway to the Gulf, and the most organized insurance market in the GCC. Its success is no secret. Bahrain is easy to get to, and with so many regional and multinational members of the insurance and reinsurance community domiciled here, it is very productive for visitors to travel to Bahrain. We also have great infrastructure, and visa lead times are also visitor friendly.
